Today I paid my friend Nick a small visit with the camera to get some new shots of his scratch card build of Musashi in scale ….1:100 (around 1/8”) and in that scale the model is 2.63 meters long (8.6 ft)! Musashi was the second and final Yamato class battleship and named after Musashi province. Yamato, Musashi was a member of the largest and most heavily-armed and armored class of battleships ever constructed. She was sunk after intense air attacks on October 24, 1944 during the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea
Nick has been building his Musashi for over 2 years now, and seems that it will take another year. But you can see that things do progress. Comparing to last year visit, I see now completed turrets; he is now working on the aft planes catapults.
The whole hull is made of cardboard and based on self drawn plans based
on the Skulski’s books from the series of Anatomy of the Ship. Nick
drew the plans in Corel Draw. Musashi is being built from water line
and is placed on a wooden board. Frames were cut out from 5 mm thick
plywood to have better strength. The base of the deck is also made of
plywood, but 3 mm thick this time. All other items are built from 0.8
mm cardboard. Wood planked decks are planed with wooden planks;
chequered iron decks are covered with chequered scheme sheets used by
architects and are available in number of scales. I will most
definitely use those sheets as well for my models. The hull and turrets
have rivets markings all over. Main artillery barrels were lathed by
another modeller in Germany, and they look great! I did couple of
etched parts for Nick as well, and now I could have seen the mounted on
the model.
Nick is building the model in his attic with quite narrow door frame,
and it seems it will be quite hard to take her out later on. But he
jokes that he will build glass frame and will keep her there just as
well. I hope he will find a way to get his Musashi out somehow. That
model should be displayed to wider modellers’ audience. To see such
huge card models is simply very impressive!
We were comparing the Flak barrels I have from RB Model if they match
the Musashi and Japanese style, but unfortunately they are slightly
different cooling system and a bit too long. They more match English
style. But barrels themselves are beautiful. I hope the producer will
also introduce Japanese style flak barrels in scale 1:100.
Nick’s original thread has been started at http://www.kartonbau.de - http://www.kartonbau.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=9941 .
Aha, also at the very end I saw very interesting model also of Musashi
but this time built as a wreck under water! Model based on plastic set
and weathered to look like it had spent 50 years under water. Have a
look at few pictures. Simple and so effective to watch.
