Deckhouse Mould and its Laminate

I figured out that my mould of Halny’s deckhouse will consist of 4 parts and out of those 3 will be made of laminate. Otherwise I would not be able to get the plug of the mould. The works have been spread across three subsequent Saturdays. My family took it well, especially smelly pieces. I am now released and can say that it was success and I do not have to repeat anything.

First stage - building the front of the deckhouse.
After second and third stages i.e. left and right walls of the deckhouse the whole looks like that. Before disassembling I screwed all pieces together to make sure nothing moves.

The rear of the mould is made of 4 mm thick beaverboard pieces and few planks for reinforcements. This element has to close and strengthen the mould so it keeps the geometry during laminating process. I still do not know if that rear wall of the deckhouse will be laminated or perhaps I will build as bulkhead. I have to think about that.

I waited few days and in between I cleaned and sanded the construction on the outside. Having delicately punched with plastic hammer the structure I managed to part the mould from the plug without any problems. On the picture you can see rough view before any treatment i.e. cleaning, waxing, etc.

Ready form after preliminary assembly. It has small chip in bottom right corner at the rear. I have the piece and will glue it back with CA glue. After polishing it will not be visible. The mould goes back onto the plug to season for a week or so.

To laminate the deckhouse you need some time. Basically the whole day. You need to book the workshop i.e. kitchen table that is why I am so delayed. Upfront I have prepared card templates and used them to cut fibre glass and de-laminating clothes.
The technique is exactly the same as with the lighthouse but a bit more time consuming.
I was scared a bit but it worked out nicely. I sanded briefly the edges, and excesses are visible at assembly points.
The deckhouse goes back to its mould.

The weather during Easter was good for sitting at the table so I sat in the kitchen and glued in few frames and reinforcements from 3mm plywood.

Those parts of the construction that will be visible I covered with 1 mm polystyrene.
