Galleon Wodnik
BoatModelling.com & Wodnik
I think my galleon Wodnik deserves a bit of follow up on her official web site i.e. here! She has been worked on quite heavily over last few weeks and months and she starts to look like real galleon! Parallel building log is also being updated on MSW forum Major achieved steps are:

  • hull planking has been completed and the it has been initially sanded but not fully yet;
  • main decks has been planked and tree nailed also! It took some time but it was absolutely worth it.

To remind – the hull is planked with african walnut, underwater part with birch which is already painted white with primer.

For the decks I chose african avodire wood, which came out really nicely. Very light wood. Treenails are drawn from bamboo bought at local supermarket as sushi or barbecue sticks. I had number of avodire planks 6 m thick, I painted them black on both sides and then sawed 1 mm thick decking planks with black edges imitating culking. Looks very nice I must say.

Inside,  the gun port and bulwarks are planked with pear wood, a little bit reddish in colour which gives nice contrast to the deck or ports.

Whole deck and the hull were drilled with 0.8mm drilling bit and filled with treenails. On the deck I placed treenails on every beam, the hull however has them only on every second frame. Other frames will get metal nails that will stick slightly out. I will nail them after final sanding of the ports and treatment with wooden oils.

In parallel I am working on the rudder, forecastle’s doors and their hinges which are photo etched from 0.1 mm brass plate and then painted with anthracite (sort of black) enamel.

Before closing the deck of course I had to build few fittings that will not be reachable later on but will be visible through the gratings and those are capstan and fife rail and gun barrels. Capstan and rail are made of sapeli wood and were treated with oil.

Barrels are casted from tin. See whole article on casting here .

Next steps are to work on the railings, close the decks and move towards finishing off the hull with their channels for deadeyes etc.

One more year and Wodnik will be able to sail away from my shipyard!

I have compiled small video from treenailing process, and placed in the gallery section under Users Gellaries - Drawing Treenails

And here under seperate gallery I have put ALL pictures I have made during the build so far: Gallen Wodnik Gallery
