Second thing I realized while carrying on with planking around different curves was that I have to develop better method of planks bending. I tried three or four different methods including cooking planks, keeping the over candle’s fire, I used the various tools proudly called plank benders. In the end all none of those methods was really very good. They work but not very sufficient. I finally came up after test, and having spoken to other modellers on the web, to I strongly believe optimal method for bending which is usage of soldering iron with round knob at the end. I have written the small How To Bend Planks.
Back to stealers. Wodnik is a Dutch type build so my stealers follow that methodology. Mondfeld nicely describes the difference between English and Dutch stealers in his book.
Underwater birch planks I bent with candle light method. During work on African walnut planks I switched to soldering iron method - How To Bend Planks . Except the stem are all is fairly easy. I planked one level above the wale, placed second wale which indicates basically bottom line of gun ports. Then attached upper wales which more or less close gun ports line. Next I planed the space between those wales with 3 levels of normal planks. My normal planks are 2x5x140mm (0.08 x 0.2 x 5.5 inches). Wales are almost the same except that they are 3 mm thick (and harder to bend!)
From PCV block I cut out a square with gun ports dimension, marked them on the planking and with 1 mm milling bit I cut of and filed Wodnik gun ports. Hopefully in next few days I will finish off the planking. And will carry on with decks!
