| How to Create Convex Sails |

 Sail with the wind Best sails are made of lightweight cotton cloth called batiste in most of the world, sometimes name cambric will also be heard. Cotton cloth for sails has to be prepared for sails making i.e. should be coloured and strengthened. The colouring is done by soaking the cloth in normal black tea and strength is achieved by starching the fabric.
Machine sew the sails along the lines as drawn on the plans and cut them out. Afterwards sew the sails to yards, then moisture the cloth a little bit with water and hang it using extra threads or ropes so the surface of the sails is parallel to ground level (see picture below). Protect the sail with foil and apply some weight for instance a little bit of sand.
When the sail dries you delicately waterproof and strengthen the shape with transparent varnish, we used nitro lacquer. This should be done when the sail is filled with sand bag, and the sail should be really dry!
