Santa Maria and Nina
Tuesday, 28 November 2006

Models of ships from Christopher Columbus fleet: Santa Maria and Nina which departed from Spain on August 3, 1492 towards India.

Flagship Santa Maria was a larger round-hull ship also called nao. Christopher Columbus himself piloted Santa Maria. She was a merchant ship between 200-600 tons with length of 75 feet and width 25 feet.

Caravel Nina with shallower draft comparing to nao. Nina was between 150 and 300 tons so she could not carry too much cargo.

Both models are built from plans and sets published by Shipyard (Issue #20).

Plans were scanned and enlarged by 50%. Frames of both models were cut out of 2 mm thick cardboard. Space between bulkheads was filled with building foam.

All card and paper elements were replaced by alder veneer and stained towards oak colour.

Santa Maria  €600
Nina €500
