Deck House
Friday, 7. April 2006

The hull is generally painted, however it still requires some corrections here and there. It is time to start work on deckhouse. Zenit’s deckhouse covers bigger part of the deck; its bottom part has relatively easy rectangular shape. Upper part with the bridge is a bit more complicated as its front has round shapes.

Whole construction is made of 1 mm plywood. I started with cardboard to trying to get proper shape of walls touching the deck, as deck is not flat if you remember. Bottom walls look almost like 4 rectangles. Once I am happy with the shape I cut them out from plywood and put all 4 parts together. Longer sections on both sides I reinforce with planks on the inside. Then mark locations for windows and bulleyes and cut or drill out all necessary wholes. Then I work on walls attached hatches. All in all there is absolutely nothing special here, typical modelling work requiring certain level of precision.

The Bridge

Then I fit the roof of deck house and floor for the bridge. Bridge’s front is much more complicated since it is oval plus has big round edges, and many windows. Work on bridge I started with easy parts i.e. sides and back walls, which are totally straight rectangles. As to front part, first I glued 4-5 blocks of scrap wood with pre-cut angle on one side. Final front plate of the bridge will be glued to those blocks afterwards, and then when it is dry I will bend the side parts. All this also is made of 1 mm plywood. This process was time consuming as you had to wait for glue to dry completely. Of course front panel was pre-shaped a bit. Whole deck house has to be repainted. I have made so many mistakes there with my splashing, especially on the bridge, which is not really visible on the pictures but it makes me feel bad.
