Original Zenit & Horyzont
Tuesday, 22. November 2005

KID, met on modelling forum, sent those 3 pictures. First 2 became invaluable during hull’s construction. I will explain that later.

Andrzej Bryska, from the same forum, has sent me fantastic pictures of original "Zenit" from 1978 taken by instructor Edward Janczewski. See original Zenit in Photo Galleries section.

Documentation and History of Zenit

Zenit, Plans
Plans from Modelarz
I started with what I had, so plans from 1971… and there very poor black-and-white picture and two columns of description, 3 sheets of drawings not keeping scale. In 70s model drawings printing was quite poor too say the least. But now what do we have copying machines for… exactly for that purpose – so we can scan and adjust the plans to desired scale!

In parallel I was looking for any other additional data o the web...

Here are some results:

>>It will be difficult. Something like 3 years ago Zenit and Horyzont were scrapped. New instrumental ship Horyzont II replaced them. Sorry they are gone... try to contact shipowner - Polish Nautical Academy in Gdynia (www.wsm.gdynia.pl). Do not expect too much. In 1990, as a student tried to get plans of “Dar Pomorza”. Was welcomed very friendly, but it appeared that 90% of documentation vanished (I know from shipyard’s designers that the school received 3 complete sets of documentation). Out of all that could have been useful for modelers were only drafts drawings of the hull in 1:50 scale. I hope you will have more luck. Let us know on the forum when you find something interesting. SZKUTNIK."<<

>>I sailed on sister ship - "NAVIGATOR", the deck (at least part from deckhouses till stern and port) was wooden – I will remember forever bricking it… …stern was welded from boards, "Horyzont" and "Azymut" had prolonged top deck over then stern, last year "Horyzont" belayed in Kolobrzeg next to old yachting port Conrad. Most probably will not be scrapped, as she was bought buy a guy with plans to organize tourist cruises. If you have problems with plans and pictures od M/S "Horyzont", look for fishing trawlers from series "birds", which were rebuilt in 1962-1965 into interesting for you units. Having said that, "Horyzont" used to be "Puchacz" SW 89.<< Now, that is one and important point that MUST be thorougly searched.

>>To supplement with some details…hulls of very unsuccessful cutters, who were supposed to fish in North Sea so called "birds", survived besides school (instrumental ships) also as:

- school cutter "Franciszek Zubrzycki" – ship-owner Nautical Technical School in Darlowo. I believe that underwater part was not changed. Belays in Darlowo.

- Sailing boat s/y "Zawisza Czarny" (!!!!) ex "Cietrzew" Hull distinctly prolonged and added using welding technique, heavy keel was added. Those details are correct as Captain I led repairs in the dock. Plans in "Modelarz" and paper model already show prolonged hull (“Zawisza Czarny”) but deckhouse still comes from the cutter. Currently the deckhouse is a backdeck.<<

That post shocked me, I did not realize that well known "Zawisza Czarny" is actually ZENIT's sister. I did comapre the hulls, and they are really similar :-)
