R-17 Halny - Fibre Glass Laminating HOW-TO

Laminating at Home
Plugs are secured and we can carry on with the moulds.

From time to time someone is asking how to actually laminate so I will allow myself to show how I am doing it. You have to start with getting such set of tools and materials.

We have here epoxy resin, hardener, scale, plastic containers, thicknesser for the resin, paint/dye/pigment, paper towels, two types of fibre cloth 120 and 250 g/m2, scissors, brush and rubber gloves.

Tin and Resin Casting in Silicone Moulds

Polyester Resin Fittings
Tin Alloy Casting. I think the movie says it all, well almost. It is a bit dark in some moments but I hope that those undecided can judge that it is not that hard in the end.

Few words of explanation. Tin alloy I placed in old camping pot and put it on fire in the kitchen. The pot will increase its size as the temperature rises so most probably you will hear some funny noises. After about 5 minutes the tin will start to melt. I switched on the camera at that point so you can see me already stirring it. Final step is simply to delicately pour into the mould.

Silicone Moulds Making - Guns Casting

SYMSIL T Mould
SYMSIL T Mould
Model building reality requires to prepare number of gun barrels for my galleon Wodnik. So time came to cast them!

Final material that will be used for casting has not been chosen yet i.e. it will be either polyester resin or tin alloy.

Having that in mind I chose form material that can work with both e.g. SYMSIL T silicone rubber, which is quite hard and can withstand casting solution with temperature of up to 300°C.

Symbionis GmbH, BoatModelling.com's mother from the legal perspective, in relation of the shop and so on, has now opened new web site:

Silikon Shop - www.silikon-shop.eu and www.silicone-shop.eu. They point to the same server, but we wanted to make it easier for German and English speaker.

We now offer first three silcone rubbers - SYMSIL - as part of larger family of silcone,  elastomers products.
Great stuff for moulds making, for those small and big forms of course.
