Help needed with not usual deck planking 2007/09/25 00:45 Karma: 0
Hi All,

I would need some advice on how to bend the strips correctly for the following kind of deck planking (picture attached). Obviously, I cannot use a strip bender for that.

Thanks for any hints.
Daniel.

Hello Daniel,

Put the plank in the middle (king plank) and start planking on both sides starting from the middle. If the planks are thin you will be able to bend them without major problems. Wet them and place on the deck and bend to shape. You can also use hot iron to press them to deck (ask you wife first ) Water and steam will make miracles. Get planks thinner than 1 mm and you will manage.

Perhaps you can post some pictures from the process!
Cheers
Jerzy

Thanks Jerzybin,

Here's the finished deck.

It took me a lot of effort to do it (especially as my first deck planking) so I'm quite proud of the results. Even if the deck is not perfect

The deck has been sanded with P150 then P320 sand paper and it is very smooth now. I may sand it more with P400 but not sure.

Next step is to varnish it but not sure if I should use matt or satin/gloss varnish ?

Thanks.

Glad that I was perhaps of some help.
As to varnishing... I would not use varnish. I am in favour of using different types of oils e.g. Danish Oil.
Oils nicely expose the natural beauty of wood.
Cheers
