I have built a large number of model ships over the past 30 years. This year my wife bought me the Corel model of the Endeavour as a christmas present , knowing how much pleasure I (usually) get from making such models.
Aaargh! It is a nightmare!!!
So far , and I am only at the completion of the hull stage, I have encountered the following problems:
a) the main frames were not cut to be symetrical and so had to be reshaped.
b) the outer planking is of a dark wood which seems incredibly brittle and whether soaked or not will split as soon as a pin comes near it! Even using a plank bender you will appreciate that a hull shape as complex as the Endeavour will need some pinning while the glue dries!
c) The handrails are to be made of a flexible wood , but there is not enough of it included in the box.
d)An "L" shaped wood is included to make the steps down the hull sides. There is only enough for one and a half sides using the sizes given in the instructions.
e) The transom windows are made from a metal casting. The instructions detail how to make the transom , finishing by "bending it slightly to fit" .... at which point the metal casting snapped!!!
f) I now find that one rudder hinge is missing.......
I am to say the least very disappointed, especially as the shop had several models of the Endeavour and recommended this as the best one!!!
I am a retired Headmaster and have been modelling for about 50 years, starting with the famous "two bob" Airfix kits and progressing to wooden ship kits , military models ,as well as model railways.
